Spiritual Direction

What is Spiritual Direction?

Individuals often come to Dunrovin to reflect on life’s challenges and to seek God’s guidance. Jerome Meeds, the Director of Dunrovin Retreat Center, is available to provide spiritual direction. Below is an overview of spiritual direction.

 What is it?

The phrase, spiritual direction, is misleading because it seems to indicate a relationship defined by one person telling another how to go about becoming holy.  It is, rather, a relationship whose purpose is to help the directee perceive the action and call of God in his or her own life.

Spiritual direction not only helps a person see better, but also provides an external affirmation for the efforts being made by a sincere person of Faith.  Good spiritual directors listen well and lend emphasis to what their clients may not have heard themselves say.

Accountability to another human helps a person articulate his or her faith internally as well, and thus bring it more consciously into lived experience.

What Happens?

The focus of spiritual direction is the life of the client with a special emphasis on prayer:  How, when, how much time is devoted to it?  How does the client feel about their use of and the perceived effects of their prayer time?

These subjects are pursued together in a prayerful setting, one on one, oftentimes monthly. In the case of a private, directed retreat, the directee generally sees the director for an hour each day, spending the rest of the time in leisure and prayer.  Those persons of faith who value spiritual direction use it as a tool to reinforce their own efforts at cooperation with God’s activity in their lives.
